100 years ago, Joshua Slocum was sailing the
world's first solo circumnavigation on Spray, his gaff rigged fishing yawl. Today, Bill and Mary
Harpster sail Joshua, a replica of Spray, around the Bay, up to the Delta, and out into
the local ocean.
Joshua was launched in April of 1982
and sails virtually every weekend. Although we built a new jib two years ago and replaced the mizzen
in 1991, the Pineapple main and tops'l are all original equipment. And the mainsail has never been off
the boat! Bill points out the sail does have three holes in. These were made by a "black powder
cannon" on the 4th of July in a mock battle in Suisun Bay. But the are very small-- and heat sealed
besides.
